‘Old North State’ captures the sacrifice that comes with chasing a new chapter. Reflecting on leaving home behind, the song follows the passage of time and the bittersweet acceptance that growth often demands loss. At its heart is the line, “I won't miss home like I'd miss you, dear”, which is a reminder that some departures are worth making.
Serving as the project's cinematic payoff, ‘Country Life’ embraces classic country textures, including lap steel guitar and a stripped-back, roots-driven rhythm section. Developed alongside an American country music enthusiast inspired by artists such as Johnny Cash, the track brings an authentic country character to Bailey's melodic songwriting style.
Where ‘Old North State’ is the decision to leave, ‘Country Life’ is the reward. Set against the landscapes of Virginia, from Roanoke and the Blue Ridge Mountains to Smith Mountain Lake, it paints a picture of driving an old black ’93 Ford down dirt roads, dancing beneath fireflies, and finding comfort on a porch swing. With echoes of Zac Brown on the radio, the song leans into Americana escapism.
At its core, ‘Country Life’ is both a love letter to the American South and to the person who makes a place feel like home. Its central hook, “I've got a whole lot of love and a little more time, I could get used to a Country Life,” reflects both the joy of the moment and the patient hope that the life imagined in the song will one day become reality.
As he continues to dream and draw from folk, indie and country influences, the project adds another chapter to a growing catalogue shaped by warmth, melody and storytelling.
More on Jack Bailey…
Hailing from the Leeds-Bradford area of Yorkshire and living in London, Jack is a self-taught indie-pop/singer-songwriter who is carving out a space in the industry with earnest storytelling and delicate attention to detail in his music.
Bailey’s music bridges between modern pop sensibilities and singer-songwriter introspection. His distinct blend of musical inspiration was born from the relentless, conversational storytelling style of Ed Sheeran, yet he channels the sweeping, romantic pop energy of Taylor Swift, the relentless heartbreak of Maisie Peters and folk-pop elements from Noah Kahan.
Jack designed his 2025 track "Autumn Girl" to capture that classic "Love Story" magic, and his debut EP, Open Heart Surgery (2024), was a deeply thoughtful and vulnerable group of tracks which opened up his world to new listeners. Airplane (2025) is another outstanding atmospheric track that continues to showcase his evolving, upbeat indie-pop sound, and carve out his unique identity.
