Behind the song

"But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion." - 2 Corinthians 11:3

"The Fall" was born from the tunnel vision that you get when you completely surrender yourself to someone else's reality. In a relationship, the biblical metaphor of Adam and Eve can become all too real. It perfectly captures that devastating loss of innocence, and the visceral pain of realizing you traded your own Eden for someone who was winning at their own game. I bought so deeply into her world. I sold my dreams, only to find myself living entirely under her. It hurts so much to admit how easily I let myself become someone's "sacred land".

But the true weight of "The Fall" isn't in the heartbreak; it's in the bitterness that I was left with and how I let that go, to reclaim my power. As my lyrics and the mood of the song shift into the cold reality of this fictional 'November', the embers burn out and the dynamic flips. I have never had my coffee black, in fact, I couldn't think of anything worse, but that line was my way of swallowing the doubt, letting the illusion die, and stepping back in to reality, where I have the power to control my own destiny. At the end of the track, there's a fight; literally, metaphorically, physically, mentally... It's my surrender to the truth, inevitably becoming a better man with the scars she left. Surviving that kind of betrayal hurts, but just as the fall did for humanity, carrying the scars of that stolen innocence is what ultimately set me free. Maybe I did have to be exiled to kill the curses she left. ;)

I'm chugging pitchers, posting pictures, just to get what I want You bit my tongue, you never called me, now I'm screaming your songs The light was ours, but it's been hours, now the time's getting on And you're a backstage lover, so you break when I'm gone My love's your yesterday, but baby now you're where you belong And I wanna kiss you, but you'd rather shake my hand We played the scene, but then you left me for the band, and Went to your shows, but no you'll never understand You were Eve and I was sacred land You said you loved me, thought I had you in my hands Sold all my dreams, and then I bought your Neverland, and I'm only Adam, so I'll never understand Left my Eden, and now I'm damned I felt the fall of our love firsthand I wander back streets, hope you'll see me, but we'll never be one You broke the promise, held the secret, I was meant to be touched Now you won't hold me, but it's only 'cause the time's getting on And you're an open letter, only tear when I'm gone The garden's lonely, but I see now you're where you belong And I wanna kiss you, but you'd rather shake my hand We played the scene, but then you left me for the band, and Went to your shows, but no you'll never understand You were Eve and I was sacred land You said you loved me, thought I had you in my hands Sold all my dreams, and then I bought your Neverland, and I'm only Adam, so I'll never understand Left my Eden, and now I'm damned I felt the fall of our love firsthand Now it's November, and all the embers have burned out Tried to remember all that faith we talked about I'll take my coffee, black and bitter like the doubt Behavior of a savior, take a bow You tried to kiss me, but I'd rather shake your hand Go play the scene, I'll leave a message for the band, and I'm in your prayers, but you'll never understand Now I'm free, I'm in the promised land Go on and tempt me girl, my head's still in the sand Playing a scene, I'm still the last one at the stand, and I'm killing curses, you're the storm I couldn't stand It's the fall of our love you planned And I wanna kiss you, but you'd rather shake my hand We played the scene, but then you left me for the band, and Went to your shows, but no you'll never understand You were Eve and I was sacred land You said you loved me, thought I had you in my hands Sold all my dreams, and then I bought your Neverland, and I'm only Adam, so I'll never understand Left my Eden, and now I'm damned (Now I'm a better man, with the scars you left) And I wanna kiss you, but you'd rather shake my hand (Satan's letterman, and you know the rest) We played the scene, but then you left me for the band, and (I'll be better babe, now I'm not with you) Went to your shows, but no you'll never understand (I'm the saviour of the garden, and the burden's on you) You were Eve and I was sacred land (Held me through it all, yeah you know you gave me the) You said you loved me, thought I had you in my hands (Fruit and stole all my innocence) Sold all my dreams, and then I bought your Neverland, and (Took the knowledge love, now you see it all) I'm only Adam, so I'll never understand (But you led me to The Fall) Left my Eden, and now I'm damned (You led me to The Fall) I felt the fall of our love firsthand
