Behind the song
For my first demo release, "Love You, Goodbye" captured that heavy, helpless moment when you realize there’s nothing left to say but exactly those words. The hardest goodbyes for me aren't the ones where you fall out of love, but those where you're watching them walk away while you're still completely engulfed. I wanted to portray my sinking, hollow feeling of watching my relationship stall, knowing she was already looking for someone new and just waiting to spend the night with someone else. Recognizing that was brutal for me, but I'm not an angry person, so I let her spread her wings. "Love You, Goodbye" is my realization that she lost the key to let me back in, and the only thing left to do is take a bow.
I have a way of regreting everything I do, so this song is a nice break from that. Even while watching her slowly move on, I couldn't ignore the fact that she still gave me the best years I could have asked for. I wanted these lyrics to hold onto those memories. By the end of the track, I'm left holding onto her old notes and secrets (now long-gone, don't worry), and pretending to feel alright when I’m clearly not. It is a tragic yet beautiful kind of peace. If she's better off, I'm happy. I love you, Goodbye.
You're falling, stalling while you figure out how you feel
You're calling your friends asking them if this seems surreal
You can't help wondering what it might be like
To spend the night with him instead of I
Now it's time to open up
And let you go
Spread your wings
I've given all my love
And now you can't find the key to let me back in
But love, before you go
I'll never regret giving you everything I had
'Cause you gave me the best years I could ask as a man
And I'll never forget
The way that you held my thigh on the longest drives
And I miss the way that you curled up when you were hurt inside
But all that's left to say
Is "I love you, goodbye"
"I love you, goodbye"
You left me drowning in the bitter sea
And now I know how you really saw me
It wasn't as a lover, more like a brother
But the heartache was worth it when I saw you with another
'Cause I know you're better off without me
But I'll never regret giving you everything I had
'Cause you gave me the best years I could ask as a man
And I'll never forget
The way that you held my thigh on the longest drives
And I miss the way that you curled up when you were hurt inside
But all that's. left to say
Is "I love you, goodbye"
And I'll always be left with the notes that you wrote me, secrets you told me
I, and it's honestly best that we ended and I'm pretending to feel alright
But I'll miss the way that you called me hoping I'd feel the same
But all that's left to say
is "I love you, goodbye"
now all that's left to say
is "I love you, goodbye"
"I love you, goodbye"
