Behind the song
"Airplane" is frozen in time, but it's a feeling I know all too well. It's an ode to all the long-distance relationships that endure and survive despite the miles apart. The song tells my personal story of the brutal tug-of-war I contend with every time I have to leave the USA. I love that place so deeply, and all because of my wonderful Lauren. Leaving never feels like a normal journey because I'm leaving my heart behind every time I do. Knowing we'll be apart "only for a month" never makes those goodbyes easier. Every single departure breaks me.
Listening to "Airplane" always brings me to tears. It's so raw and unfiltered... The place I belong disappearing beneath the clouds is devastating, and I wanted this song to live in that vulnerable, suspended space where you can't touch the ground, while you're "London bound" (look at my rhyming skills) ;)
I watch the rain fall on the window
I concentrate as the hours roll by
I miss the way life was so simple
I complicate, as I fall in to
Another confession, another transgression
another ticket home
Silent hesitation, Her trains at the station
I wish that I could go
But all that I know is the blue horizon
And all that I know is that my feet can’t touch the found
And all that I know is when the silver moon starts shining
Is that I’m a couple hours, a hundred miles, and homebound
I’m homebound
We separate, holding each other
Cold winter came, I talked to your mother
Life has a way of making you wonder
If it’s in the plan, to be so far from each other
And I’ll keep on waiting, and you’ll keep on saying
It’s only for a month
I’m boarding, you’re praying
I’d rather be staying
It’s not long enough
Now all that I know is the blue horizon
And all that I know is that my feet can’t touch the found
And all that I know is when the silver moon starts shining
Is that I’m a couple hours, a hundred miles, and homebound
And I thought I could hold my breath as the sun was rising
And a little time, it’s not wrong crying about
The curve of the world keeps dying
as the lights come in and I’m London bound
And I’m back to living this little life
And it’s a single dial for you, I’ll survive
And you settle in to being alone at night
It’s fine
For all that I know, to be the blue horizon
And all that I know, when my feet can’t touch the ground
Is hoping that one day maybe you’ll see the silver moon shining
As we’re a couple hours, a hundred miles and homebound
